Since the beginning of his practice, Lama has uninterruptedly built a body of work focused on the research of time-based media with a prominent approach to the thought process of filmmaking while maintaining the empirical character of his visual arts background, ranging from experimental cinema, to installation and sculpture; ultimately becoming a key figure in the recent video art production from Latin America.

is work is often characterized by the use of visual poetry and irony in analogies where representations of power structures are subverted to reveal different articulations of human condition in politics, the artworld and gender issues, while often featuring cultural references from sources such as cinema, philosophy and psychoanalysis.

He has exhibited at the Havana Biennale; the Curitiba Biennale, the Triennial of Contemporary Art in Prague, the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the Museum of Moving Image in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Lima, among others.

His pieces are included in international collections such as The Getty Center in Los Angeles, Videobrasil in Sao Paulo, Caixa Forum in Barcelona, Instituto Cervantes in Munich, Wifredo Lam Center in Havana, the Museum of Art in Lima - MALI, as well as in numerous private collections.
